Let it be said that many Grand Hyatts are great business hotels but some aspire to be more. Its installation at Shenzhen, not particularly known to be a welcoming city, is not just a handsome property with well designed contemporary rooms and suites but true to the GH blueprint has a lovely spa, a great club lounge and a stable of outstanding restaurants. Most worthy of praise is its service orientation, which routinely saw staff going out of the way to inject warmth and efficiency into a guest's itinerary.

Another marble and carpet FS property that is structurally comfortable but conceptually not outstanding. FS SZ delivers grand service within one's expectation of the brand but has supplanted sublimity with functionality. This is hardly surprising, and is in fact commendable, China being China and Shenzhen being one of its many  transitional cities without a cultural beat or heritage beam. There are sparks here, but just not fireworks.

In any big Asian city there would always stand a Shangri-la with height, expanse and recognition. This the Shangri-la Shenzhen has inherited and the business and convention crowd can always count on such a property to cater and deliver to expectations. The restaurants here, especially Shang Palace, are superbly managed but its focus on service was unevenly distributed - pity because at some points the Horizon Club attendant was downright petulant and rude.
